What is aeroponic growing technology?

Aeroponic farming is the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment, without the use of soil.

This innovative approach provides plants with the ideal amount of nutrition and hydration. And it’s sustainable, too — using a fraction of the water and land required by traditional soil-based growing methods.

Aeroponic crops grow faster and produce greater yields, on average, than soil-grown crops.

In a nutshell, what is the tower growing process?
  • Plants grow in a soilless medium called rockwool, which provides plant roots with oxygen and consistent moisture, encouraging rapid, healthy growth.

  • When our seedlings are ready — usually about 3 weeks after germination — we'll plant them in our towers.

  • The reservoir stores the plant nutrient solution. Our proprietary plant food contains the pure earth minerals essential to healthy plant development, providing an all-natural “shortcut” for plants, which typically must source nutrients from decomposing organic matter in soil. The result is greater nutrient uptake and superior growth for a range of plants.

  • The solution cascades down the tower, nourishing plants. A low-wattage, submersible pump in the reservoir pushes the nutrient solution to the top of the tower through a small central pipe. The nutrient solution then drips down the inside of the tower, evenly cascading over the exposed plant roots. A timer ensures this process repeats continuously—usually in 15-minute increments—to deliver the ideal amount of oxygen, water and nutrients to plants at the perfect time.

  • In just a few short weeks, you’ll be enjoying abundant produce, harvested at its peak (so you can be at yours).

What are the advantages of aeroponics compared to traditional growing?

The Fresh-Tech aeroponic growing process produces up to 30% greater yields 3x faster compared to traditional farming methods. For most herbs and leafy greens, the seedling to harvest cycle can be as short as 21 days.

Why are Fresh-Tech’s aeroponically grown products fresher and much finer?
  • We can reduce transportation distances, which preserves product freshness, flavor, and nutritional content — while also protecting both your budget and the environment. That means our produce retains peak freshness and flavor. Plus, aeroponic methods actually increase the nutrient density of some crops, such as kale, tomatoes, and squash.

  • Did you know that nearly 90% of the lettuce sold in the U.S in the winter comes from Yuma, AZ and that bagged lettuces and greens can be up to two weeks old from the time they are harvested, cleaned, and packaged, and shipped to stores? We thought you should!

  • For soil-based farmers, a change in weather can be the difference between a record harvest and a debilitating season. But with our Tower Farm, we never have to worry about droughts or floods.

How does Fresh-Tech control the growing climate and ensure reliable results?

By growing in a greenhouse, we can tweak temperature, humidity, and other environmental variables to perfection. And that means we can produce premium crops out of season, efficiently manage pests, grow year-round, and more. Using our tower growing technology, we can fit 10x more plants in our greenhouse compared to horizontally oriented systems. This allows us to sell more produce that you crave.

I’m concerned about healthy, nutritious alternatives for my family. Why is Fresh-Tech a great option for me?

Eating lots of fruits and vegetables is good for you. But you already knew that. The problem is keeping a refrigerator stocked with fresh produce can be both costly and inconvenient.

Much of what you’ll find in the produce aisle is:

  • Grown commercially using herbicides and pesticides
  • Harvested before reaching peak ripeness
  • Shipped long distances (often from other states or countries)

And the result is weeks-old produce with diminished flavor and nutrient levels that might even contain harmful chemicals. The result, frankly, can be food that isn’t very good. (No wonder so many people think they don’t enjoy eating fruits and vegetables!)

But here’s the good news: with Fresh-Tech growing locally in our towers, you can have produce the way nature intended — fresh, flavorful, nutritious and picked at the peak of ripeness.

Is tower growing organic?

Because soil is a prerequisite for organic growing, and aeroponic systems don’t use soil, aeroponic tower growing can’t be classified as organic. But it can be equally as safe and healthy—and more efficient.

Organic gardening requires organisms in the soil to convert “organic” material into minerals plants can use. But instead of growing plants in soil, our towers use water, oxygen and pure, natural minerals to deliver nutrients directly to plant roots.

The result is higher growth rates and greater yields than resource-intensive organic methods can achieve.

What about your commitment to sustainability?

As our supply of farmland and fresh water grows scarce, the human population soars. And if we don’t pursue more efficient, sustainable farming methods, we’ll likely face global food and water shortages by 2055.

Our tower growing technology allows us to grow food without soil while using only 10% of the land required by traditional agriculture.

With closed-loop technology, our tower growing systems recycle water and nutrients. In turn, they use up to 98% less water than conventional farms.

Rather than creating more trash for the landfill, our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) boxes are reusable. We deliver your order, and you give us back the empty box next week when we bring your next weekly order. Our boxes are 100% sustainable and 100% recyclable. The technology that we utilize in our packaging means it is waterproof, hygienic, and certified for direct food contact.

All our bags and containers are made from renewable plant-based materials like wheat straw fiber, sugarcane, and corn. They can be re-used in your home (hand wash only) or disposed where it becomes soil in 2-6 months in a commercial facility.
